The Zwirners

Displacing the artistic community they represent for over 4 years now.

Concerned Neighbor from 14th Street - I think we need to worry on a bigger level as to what is happening at 229 E 13th Street. An 8 Story, 28 apartment NYU Building is starting to build now. I think this is much more of a worry than a 4 story residential building.

Another concerned neighbor, from 13th street-- I agree that 229 East 13th Street is also of concern. Both developments to me represent a disturbing rupture in the character of the East Village. They are both waaay out of scale with community norms. A four-story residential building with sixteen (or twelve, or even four) families is different from a single-family mansion that encroaches upon the livelihoods and sunlight of others-- living in 300- to 500-square-foot apartments.

You know, at the community board meeting where we first complained about the Zwirners, there were a bunch of people there to discuss a new set of zoning plans they were going to do in the East Village that hopefully would keep the whole area "short" and prevent those tall glass buildings from going up. If you're interested in the issue, you should go to our community board and find out more. We're in CB3. The proposal they had was not quite as restrictive as landmarking, but it should keep our neighborhood from morphing into Murray Hill.
