I want to know...

A commenter asked what happened to the folks whose light was blocked off by the expansion of their mansion. Are you living in a dark apartment? Have you moved? Please log in and leave your stories. I'm especially curious as to what happened to the low-income folks in the building on the northern end of the Zwirner mansion who were the original victims of the expansion.

In our building, nearly everyone on the line of blocked windows has sold their apartment. Most have been living there so long that they made a profit, even in this market. So, not all bad news. But who could blame them?

The change to my home has affected me profoundly. My bedroom now receives about 1.5 hours of indirect light per day. It used to receive direct sunlight from about 8-9am until past 2pm. Lying in my bed I could see trees and open sky. I would awake to sunshine on my face. To me it was heaven. Now I have a white stucco wall 4.5ft from my windows. That is all you see. My bathroom is even worse as it is closer to junction where the southwest corner of the Zwirner building now connects to our building's eastern wall where it bows out to meet our lot line. This sealed off the small air shaft completely. Adding insult to injury, that southern expansion ends barely one foot past that juncture. With a 14,000 sq.ft home, it would've been a relatively small sacrifice by the Zwirners to lessen the southern expansion. Even as little as 4 feet less would have left the air shaft open and allowed in a lot more light and air, even a glimpse of trees. It seems a small price to pay to leave your neighbors with just a little bit of what you are taking from them.

I still cannot forget the hellish months watching my bedroom and bathroom slowly reduced to dark claustrophobic rooms.

I go in my bedroom as little as possible now. I don't sleep in there anymore. With no night sky to see out my window I feel shut in, very claustrophobic.

I am lucky that my living room gets southern light and is still cheery and sunny. But every day, at least once, I feel a blow to my chest when I look down the hall into my now dark bedroom. And the fact that the Zwirners didn't have the decency or courtesy to speak with us, even in writing, makes me even angrier. Receiving a form letter from a third party (their architect) was just insulting. And pretty cowardly too when you think about it.

I am looking for another apartment but have not found anything I like as of yet.

As an aside, if you're thinking that maybe the Zwirners don't value light as much as the rest of us, Go to www.selldorf.com, 'Selected Projects', 'Residential', 'East Village Townhouse'. There you can read about the first townhouse expansion and how it "was transformed from a dark series of rooms into a light filled family home". It does fail to mention the effect it had on the neighbors. How very odd.

We sold our place at a lower value and moved. We couldn't stand the darkness.
